Title & Registration
Current Residents
To Obtain a Tennessee Title: If a vehicle was purchased through an individual, the purchaser must have the properly filled out title in their possession. A bill of sale is highly recommended. Odometers are required for any vehicle 2011 or newer. Sales tax will be collected at the time the vehicle is registered. Make sure the person(s) that is selling the vehicle is the name(s) on the front of the title.
Immediate Family and Gifted Vehicles: If a motor vehicle was sold to an immediate family member, that vehicle will be eligible for sales tax exemption. Immediate family members include: father, mother, children, grandparents, great grandparents, grandchildren, siblings and the spouse of any of those listed above. Gifted vehicles from non-immediate family members are eligible for sales tax exemption. If a car was sold to you by an immediate family member or a vehicle was gifted to you, you must have an Affidavit of Non-Dealer Transfers of Motor Vehicles and Boats.
Please note that if you are registering a vehicle for anyone other than a spouse, you must have a Power of Attorney for Vehicle Transactions.
New Tennessee Residents
When moving from out of state, it is required to obtain a Tennessee title and registration.
Vehicles without lienholders will need:
- Out of state title
- Out of state registration or license plate
- Two proofs of residency
Vehicles with lienholders will need:
- Out of state registration
- Full name and address of lienholder
- Two proofs of residency
*Please note that some states allow the registered owner to hold the title instead of the lienholder. If that applies to you, we will need the out of state title.
Replacement Title
If there is not a lien on the vehicle, the registered owner(s) can obtain a replacement Tennessee title. To apply for a duplicate title you must be the owner, lien holder, or have Power of Attorney for Vehicle Transactions. The registered owner(s) must appear in person and show valid identification.
If the vehicle is in two names and is conjoined by “and” BOTH parties must be present with valid identification to obtain the duplicate title.
License Plate Renewals
What is needed to renew my registration? You may bring in the renewal notice mailed to you from the state. You can bring in a copy of the registration, or if that cannot be found you can write down the tag or VIN number, or even take a picture of the numbers with your phone. We can also look it up by name or address.
Customers must renew in their own county. If you moved to Cheatham County from another county, we will need two proofs of residency in order to renew your tags in Cheatham County.
If you are renewing a license plate for anyone other than a spouse, you will need to fill out the Power of Attorney for Vehicle Transactions.
Handicap Plates/Placards
When applying for a handicap plate or placard you must have a physician complete the Application for Disabled Person License Plate, Placard, and/or Decal.
You may renew your handicap placard online.
